Your goal is to make better recordings. You are independent and want to become more proficient in mixing and mastering your recordings.

But, it’s been a struggle...

There is a lot of information on YouTube and Google. However, the amount of information and conflicting points of view make the “learning” process frustrating and overwhelming.

Learn from an actual audio engineer from the comfort of your home studio.
Join a community of home studio (and professional) engineers and producers. Ask questions while you develop your skills and gain priceless experience.
Music Production schools, Audio engineering schools, How to produce music
You have probably asked yourself:
  • "How can I get my vocals to sound like the hit songs on the radio and Spotify?"
  • "Why aren’t my mixes as loud as major label mixes?"
  • "How do I properly use equalizers and compressors?"
  • "What is bussing?"
"How Can You Develop a Career as an Audio Engineer?"
You’ve looked into recording schools that cost anywhere from $13,000 to upwards of $80,000, but you’re unsure as to whether they are really worth it. And, who wants to go in debt when even more knowledge, information and experience can be gained for a fraction of the cost?

Furthermore, you definitely aren’t interested in registering for a recording school that forces you to take a bunch of prerequisite classes and electives that have absolutely nothing to do with audio engineering. Most of these “filler” classes help these programs justify their inflated price tags.

Two decades ago, I faced a similar challenge
There was no YouTube or Google. But, after graduating from college a couple of years earlier, I left my 9 to 5 job as a financial analyst to pursue a career in the music industry.

These were the early days of home-based recording studios. I, along with a couple of buddies, had a very rudimentary home studio setup. There were casio keyboards, cassette decks, drum machines, radio shack mixing boards and microphones.
We didn’t have computers, so we had to learn to produce our music in real time without the help of sequencers and other looping technologies. This meant playing each part (drums, bass, piano, synths, etc.) one at a time for the entire length of the song until everything lined up and sounded good.

Vocals were cut on microphones that cost less than $50. And there was no acoustic treatment on the walls or in the corners. Our early recordings were mediocre, at best.

In my heart, I knew that one day we’d “make it”
Sheer determination and passion led to a local radio hit called:
“To Whom It May Concern”
That song led to a couple more of our tunes getting radio play.

There was one problem though.

We had zero knowledge of the music industry, and even less knowledge of recording and production techniques.

Sure, our songs got regular radio rotation. But, we didn’t make one red cent. Zilch!
Home Studio Tips, Recording Studio, Music Producer
In fact, we knew nothing about copyright, publishing, promotion, placements or touring. All of the essential means for protecting and making an income off of our music.

One evening, after months of feeling like I was stuck with no real solutions for growing my music career, I left my hometown (Omaha, Nebraska), boarded a Greyhound bus and headed to the East Coast.
Eventually settling in Philadelphia in the late 90s, I continued to produce and record my music. I even started to produce and record another artist who was planning to release an album.
The artist paid me $45 per week for 2-hour Saturday sessions. I had to fill the gaps with a day job, but progress was being made.

One issue that frustrated me was that my mixes sounded alright in my home studio, but sounded like hot garbage in the car and in other listening environments.

Furthermore, I never felt like I was able to achieve consistent results. Some mixes sounded decent, while others never quite came together like I’d hoped.
Home Studio Tips, Recording Studio, Music Producer
Also, equalizers and compressors were foreign to me. I would “tweak” settings and “play with knobs”, but I really didn’t know exactly what I was supposed to do with them.

By the early 2000s the computer age of recording was underway. After a lot of trial and error, reading as many audio books that I could get my hands on, spending hours producing and recording new music, and persevering through frustration and overwhelm, I started excelling at these new technologies.

In fact, it got to the point that other producers and home-based recording engineers began coming to me for advice and guidance.

Then one day I made a huge discovery!

After years of producing and recording musical projects and spending countless hours researching audio engineering, music production, and these new software technologies, I uncovered a system that made the process much simpler to understand and apply.
For a moment everything stood still. I sat in amazement of this secret that seemed to have been right beneath the surface the entire time.

Almost instantly I was able to achieve the sound I heard in my head. Music creation became second nature. Recording and mixing was not only fun, it was now simplified.

My mixes became more consistent and sounded just as good outside of my studio as they did when I listened through my monitors.

EQ and compression started to make sense and I was using these essential tools to take my mixes to another level.

Each day I was excited to produce and record new music. I started booking more clients in my home studio, and even began teaching my methods to some of those clients.
In fact, I could see that there was a need and demand for the system that I discovered. I balanced making my own music with working on music for other artists, bands and musicians.
I started reducing hours at my day job so that I could focus on the increased demand for my services. The income that was coming in was starting to be funneled into moderate investments in gear.

Just as I finished plans to start teaching my blueprint on a larger scale, the unthinkable happened...

...After returning to my apartment from printing promotional flyers at a local printer, I realized the lock on my apartment door had been changed. I stared at the yellow eviction notice taped under the peep hole and it felt like everything came crashing to a screeching halt.
What progress had been made seemed to recoil back to square one in the blink of an eye.

"What now?” I thought.

After calling my girlfriend at the time and explaining what happened, she opened up her apartment to me. It was at that moment that I knew that it was time to sh!t or get off the pot.

A day or two was spent recalibrating.

It was clear that my blueprint, my system, would not only allow me to produce and record as much of my own music as I desired, it would also enable me to produce and record numerous artists, musicians and bands in the Philadelphia tri-state region.
I would deliver to them a sound that would help propel their music to the next level.

Not only that, I could teach my system to others and help them realize their full potential with their music in their own home studios.

Within 2 years of countless home recordings and teaching others my method, I was invited by a prominent performing arts organization to relocate my home studio set up to a small room inside of their facility.
From Jazz to hip-hop, reggae to R&B, Pop to Rock, I began recording some of the most prolific artists, bands and musicians in my area.
Rap studio, Music producers near me, Music Studio
Also, the students that I taught my system to were building their own rosters of clients at their home studios. Some were even getting jobs and internships at commercial studios, live venues, colleges and universities, and Fortune 50 companies.

The blueprint was so effective that within a few years I relocated to my very own commercial recording studio. In addition to recording many genres of music, I started an Audio Engineering and Music Production school.

From a home recording studio making $45 per week with a single client to a six-figure commercial facility training scores of home studio engineers and producers, my commercial studio, Lil’ Drummaboy Recordings has become one of the country’s most effective, student- focused, consistent, and affordable audio engineering and music production schools.

The discovery that I made nearly two decades ago continues to help artists and home recording practitioners just like you launch careers, improve recording and mixing results, and provide the foundation and guidance required to earn a living in today’s music industry.
